Today we have released another free firmware upgrade for the M1, and this one’s a biggy. We focused on just three things: torque, torque, and more torque! M1 Firmware 2.3 provides a major upgrade to the torque output of the M1, increased by up to 40% in advanced mode. This means a significant improvement to hill climbing and off the line performance!

This is the most significant performance upgrade we’ve shipped yet. Our team focused on enhancing the torque curve in just the right places to dramatically increase performance, while still maintaining the smooth feel and high-speed stability of the M1.

M1 Firmware 2.3 builds on the enhanced braking performance and riding modes we introduced in M1 Firmware 2.2, and is fully compatible with every board we’ve shipped to date. If you're riding an M1, you need Firmware 2.3!

We’re working on Vision for Android, so if you do not have an iPhone, we strongly recommend borrowing one from a friend, downloading Inboard Vision and updating. The process only takes minutes and will add a ton of new features and improvements to the M1.

M1 Firmware 2.3 Features


 Increased Torque in Advanced Mode

Torque output of both Manta Drive motors is increased by up to 40% in Advanced Mode, meaning significant improvements in off-the-line and hill climbing performance. To preserve the easy learning curve we reserved the torque upgrade for Advanced Mode. We recommend that you become confident with M1’s riding characteristics before engaging Advanced Mode.

Increased Motor Thermal Limits

In order to deliver more energy to the motor, we increased the allowable operating temperature by 24F (11C). Although the motor will get hotter, after extensive testing we have determined that there are no adverse effects on motor longevity or performance. All riders should be careful about touching the motors when they are hot.

Does this update apply to all boards?

Yes, all Inboard M1’s can take full advantage of this update regardless of manufacturing date.

How do I take advantage of the extra torque?

Download the latest version of Inboard Vision for iOS, available from the App Store, and upgrade your M1 to firmware 2.3. For help on upgrading, click here. To take advantage of the extra torque, engage Advanced Mode with the RFLX Remote by triple-clicking the power button on the remote until 3 white LEDs show. Enjoy the extra starting and hill climbing power while being mindful to position your body to absorb the additional acceleration. 

What is most noticeable about the increase in torque?

You will notice that M1 is much faster off the line, and better at climbing hills. Because we focused on enhancing the torque curve in just the right places, you will notice that the board continues to deliver a very stable and controllable ride at speed.

Why is the torque improvement only available in Advanced Mode?

Torque can be a challenge for inexperienced riders to handle early on, so to preserve the easy learning curve, we reserved the torque upgrade for Advanced Mode. We recommend that you become confident with M1’s riding characteristics before engaging Advanced Mode.

How can I tell if my new board has the latest firmware?

Use the Inboard Vision App to display the board firmware version. To install the firmware update, be sure to update your Inboard Vision app first. Alternatively, the original product packaging for your M1 shows the firmware version on the top right hand corner of the product label.

Should I be concerned that the motors run noticeably hotter now?

In order to deliver more energy through the motors, we increased the allowable operating temperature by 24F (11C). Although the motors will get hotter, after extensive testing we have determined that there are no long-term adverse effects on motor longevity or performance. Applying this update in no way affects your 12-month warranty coverage. All riders should be careful about touching the motors when they are hot.
